New Work by Linda Hutchins on View in San Francisco and Portland, OR
Artist's Work Also Included in Three Recent Publications

June 20, 2008 (Portland, OR) — New sculptural work by Portland-based artist Linda Hutchins will be featured in two upcoming group exhibitions. A third exhibition will include her well-known text based work. Alongside her rigorous meditative practice of line drawing, the artist has been working three dimensionally with delicate organza fabric hand-stitched with thread. Hutchins has extended her meticulous craftsmanship into painstakingly patterned and sewn objects. Some of the pieces replicate items of personal significance to the artist—a goblet of her mother's parents, a hammerhead from her father's family—while other forms build algorithmically from the manipulation of repeated shapes. In each case, the artist attempts to distill clarity from her selected references, while embracing the inevitable imperfections of the resulting sculptures. "A mental image, whether imagined or remembered, has a perfection that cannot be achieved in reality," Hutchins observes. "In this work I am seeking to reconcile the ideal with the real." To the artist, these forms articulate a rich metaphor that recognizes the inevitability of the way life unfolds.
