LINDA HUTCHINS' WORK FEATURED IN MOTHERLODE EXHIBITION ON VIEW AT
MARYLHURST UNIVERSITY'S ART GYM, APRIL 19 - MAY 15, 2010
Gallery Talk at Noon, Thursday, May 6th

The patterns were unexpected. They lay hidden in the letter counts of the words, in the spaces between the words, in the shift to the left or right as the lines continue down the panels ... Through the delicacy of their patterns they work the meaning of words into our subconscious, a percussive beat that ties together body and mind.
    — Pat Boas, Hidden in Plain Sight, catalogue essay for Linda Hutchins' 2004 solo exhibition, Reiterations

New work by Portland artist Linda Hutchins is included in the exhibition MOTHERLODE, on view at Marylhurst University April 19-May 15, 2010. Conceived by Terri Hopkins, Director and Curator of The Art Gym, the exhibition includes work by seven artists and one poet who have made artworks that address motherhood. Hutchins has new line drawings on view, in addition to organza sculpture and typewritten works on paper. She will be participating in the conversation with the artists at The Art Gym that begins at noon on Thursday, May 6th.

One of Hutchins' works on view in MOTHERLODE, Cord, is delicately constructed of handsewn organza. Scholar Sue Taylor looks closely at this particular body of work in "Ethereal Sculpture," published in the April/May 2010 issue of Fiberarts magazine. Regarding the piece on view in MOTHERLODE, Taylor writes, "Here the cord suggests a lively, binding continuity, cycles of life, infinite potentiality. Open-ended, like life itself, Cord is among Hutchins' most ingenious works to date, not only for its disarming content and haunting formal beauty. As a cord, thread, fiber or filament, it reflects the very material of its own making." The article can be read in its entirety on the artist's web site via this link: www.lindahutchins.com/fiberarts2010.

Also of note, Hutchins' first permanent public artworks are currently being installed on the campus of Oregon College of Art & Craft. Applying the aesthetics of her line drawings to the context of architectural space and landscape, Hutchins designed two large railings made of laser-cut steel for an exterior plaza and an interior stairway associated with the new Drawing, Painting and Photography Building. The building is part of a 55,000 sq. ft expansion project designed collaboratively by BOORA Architects, Charles Rose Architects, Inc., and COLAB Architecture + Urban Design LLC. Please stay tuned for details of the artworks' dedication this fall.
