In June, Pulliam Gallery will feature Back to Basics, an exhibition of drawings and photograms by
Linda Hutchins. This new body of work draws parallels between minimal/serial/conceptual art and the
abstract learning exercises of 1960's primary school education.
Linda Hutchins has an extensive exhibition history dating back to 1988 when she graduated with
a BFA in Drawing from Pacific Northwest College of Art. Besides her first solo exhibition at Pulliam
Deffenbaugh Gallery in 2006, she has had solo or group exhibitions at Marylhurst University's Art Gym,
the Archer Gallery at Clark College in Vancouver, WA, the Northview Gallery at Portland Community
College, the Whatcom Museum of History and Art, the Nordic Heritage Museum, the Richmond Art
Gallery in Richmond, BC, Linfield College and Arena 1 in Santa Monica, CA to name a few. Her most
recent exhibition was a solo show, Through Line: Type, Ink, Thread in April at OSU's Fairbanks Gallery
in Corvallis. The Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, B.C. featured her work online and
during their May 11th symposium, New Directions in Drawing.
In 2004 her work was included in Northwest Biennial: Buildingwise at the Tacoma Art Museum and
again in 2009 for the 9th NW Biennial. That year she won the Juror's Prize for her wall drawing, Lineal
Silver (Pool).
In addition to her exhibition history, she has received two fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission,
grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and recently completed her third artist residency at
Caldera where she developed a new artistic direction which will be featured in this June show. She was
selected to design the terrace and stair railings for the Oregon College of Art and Craft's new studio
building, which extend her line drawings into three dimensions. Her work is in numerous private and
public collections including 4Culture, the King County Public Art Collection, the Tacoma Art Museum,
and the Museum of Contemporary Craft. Hutchins' past exhibitions have garnered national press
coverage—including a cover article in American Craft Magazine, a feature article in Fiberarts, and a
review in Art in America by Sue Taylor.
